Water microbiome laboratory

Caring for every drop, protecting every life and the environment in the face of the challenge of climate change

¿What is the microbiome?

The microbiome is the set all microorganism (bacteria, archea, fungi, microalgae and viruses) contained in an environmental matrix. Its monitoring turns out to be an effective alternative to know in advance episodes of outbreaks, epidemic and pandemic, 'Cause water mobilizes and protects most of the microorganisms that are mobilized on the planet. The level of resolution of microbial diversity that microbiome analyses allows also makes it a powerful tool for monitoring the effects of climate change in aquatic and continental ecosystems.

¿Why is it important to analyze the water microbiome?

The changes in physical, physicochemical and chemical environmental parameters sustained over time trigger adaptive functional responses of microorganisms, some of which enhance the pathogenic power of known microbes and lead to the appearance of new emerging pathogens that affect humans, animals, plants and industry.

Meet our laboratorie

State-of-the-art technology and a team of experts

The Water Microbiome Laboratory is oriented to the analysis, monitoring and surveillance of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses).  It has a high-value massive sequencing tool, which allows reports with greater sensitivity and precision to determine the microbiological quality of water.

Types of services

1. Microbiome analyses oriented to routine services

Iconos Lab P07.png

Determination of activity, abundance and diversity of phatogenic microotganisms of agricultural and forestry importance.

2.png

Determination of activity, abundance and diversity of microorganisms producing fouling, biogenic corrosion on metallic surfaces, including determination of biofilms on surfaces of pipelines in drinking water, irrigation and industrial food networks.

2. Microbiome analysis oriented to systematic seasonal monitoring plans and long-term epidemiological survaillance.

3.png

Epidemiological surveillance based on standard microbiological water quality monitoring.

4.png

Epidemiological surveillance based on monitoring of emerging pathogens (microorganisms that emerge and increase in incidence or distribution, affecting different organisms) of humans, animals and plants.

Epidemiological surveillance of toxin-producing microorganisms, based on monitoring of microalgae and cyanobacteria associated with toxigenic blooms in inland waters.

Our specialists team

The Laboratory's team of specialists is composed by Dr. Homero Urrutia (specialist in molecular ecology of environmental microorganisms), Dr. Felipe Aguilera (specialist in bioinformatics), Dr. (c) Natalia Padilla (specialist in microbiology and molecular biology of animal and plant pathogens in environmental matrices). Rocio Contreras and Benjamín Jara are also analysts and sequencer operators.
